Roanoke doesn’t exactly scream pizza town. It’s more of a highway stop where you can get a decent slice between the antique malls and the traffic to the lake.

But that’s what makes this list work. You’ve got the fire-roasted char of a Mister O1 brick oven on one end and the Dominican-style empanadas at FrituWhaaa on the other, which is not a pizza, but you’ll thank me later.

The range is genuinely absurd, from a star-shaped pie that costs more than your gas bill to a lunch special at Palio’s that’ll set you back less than a six-pack. So before you settle for that chain delivery again, scan the list.

One of these spots is your next regular.

Calamari pleasantly surprised diners

I walked into Pastaza with no idea what to order. The staff guided me through the menu like I was a regular. That first-time patience matters. The pizza arrived hot and fresh, the crust holding its shape. The risotto balls were the real find, crisp outside, soft within. Calamari surprised me. I expected rubbery rings. These were tender, lightly seasoned. The place is family-owned and it shows in the welcome. Nothing felt rushed. Portions were proper. If you want a straightforward pizza night without pretension, this is a solid stop in Roanoke.

Inzo Italian Kitchen earns its reputation through consistency. I have eaten here more than once and the service never dips. The staff knows the menu and offers suggestions without hovering. The food takes classic Italian plates and twists them just enough to keep things interesting. The wine list is legit, not an afterthought. The room feels cozy, the kind of place where conversations linger. For a town this size, it holds its own against DFW options. The pizza is well-built, the sauces balanced. It is a top choice if you want Italian done right.

Palio's Pizza Cafe works best at lunch. The special is a genuine deal, plenty of food for the price. Salads come out fresh with generous portions, not the sad side greens you often get. The staff moves quickly and stays friendly even when the line builds. The pizza selection is wide, so you can try a few slices without committing. Nothing about it is fancy. That is not the point. It is efficient, reliable, and easy. For a weekday meal in Roanoke, it gets the job done without wasting your time.

Mister O1 Extraordinary Pizza in Grapevine is a different animal. The Daniele pizza arrives in a star shape, which sounds gimmicky. It is not. The crust is light, the ingredients fresh. The pistachio dessert pizza is the best I have had, sweet without being cloying. The wine list pairs well with the food. Service was attentive and professional, the kind that anticipates needs. The room has energy but not chaos. If you want pizza that feels considered, this is worth the short drive. It sets a high bar for the area.

Amano Italian Bistro sits in a strip center, which is misleading. Inside feels like a proper restaurant. The service is warm and the food is made to order. The warm rolls come out first, soft with a hint of butter. The Caesar salad is fresh, the dressing sharp. Portions are generous and the prices are fair for what you get. It is family owned and that shows in the details. Nothing feels mass-produced. If you want Italian food that feels personal, this place delivers without the usual strip mall compromise.

Breakfast evokes NYC memories

FrituWhaaa brings Dominican flavors to Roanoke. The owner explained every dish before I ordered. That care set the tone. The portions are large, easily enough for two meals. The empanadas are the reason to return. The filling is savory, the shell crisp. Breakfast reminded me of the bodegas I used to visit in New York. The service is warm, almost familial. Nothing on the menu is rushed. It is a different kind of pizza place, more about the full experience. I left full and planning my next visit.

They were not afterthoughts. The avocado toast had beautiful bread, thick and toasted just right. The bison patty lacked seasoning. That was a miss. Plain and a little dry. If you stick to the chicken and vegetables, you will eat well. The space is nice for a casual meal. Just order carefully.

Leela's Wine Bar in Trophy Club was dressed up for Valentine's Day. The heart-shaped pizza is a novelty, but it works. The crust is fine, the toppings standard. The espresso martini tower came out solid, a fun centerpiece for a group. Service was attentive even with our larger party. The reservation seating was convenient, no awkward waiting. It is not a serious pizza destination. It is a place for a cute evening. If you want a drink and something shaped like a heart, this fits.

Elite India claims the best Indian food in DFW. That is a strong statement. My visit supported it. The heat is bold but layered, each spice arriving in order. The service was attentive without being intrusive. I sat outdoors, which was spacious and comfortable. A weeknight lunch meant leftovers, and I was glad for them. The curry held its flavor the next day. If you are tired of timid Indian food, this place does not hold back. It is worth the drive and the return trip.
